The Ragged Philosopher begins with a pair of Ciano Farmer Denim jeans — a rare, small-batch garment handcrafted in Richmond, Texas from Japanese selvedge fabric. Produced individually by a single maker, each piece carries a sense of time, discipline, and material integrity long before any intervention.
 
This particular pair, already marked by use, becomes the foundation for transformation within the Fly Art Atelier practice.
 
The surface is composed through layered textile fragments, assembled directly on the garment rather than applied as decoration. The work draws from the language of traditional Japanese boro and sashiko — not as imitation, but as a continuation of their philosophy of repair, accumulation, and time.
 
Worn fabrics, faded prints, and irregular textures form a dense field where structure and memory intersect. Each fragment is fixed by hand stitching that remains visible — not to conceal repair, but to acknowledge it.
 
Threads trace movement across the surface, allowing the material to retain its honesty and tension. The composition resists symmetry. Color appears in interruptions. The surface feels discovered rather than designed, guided by the existing life of the fabric.
 
The original structure of the garment remains intact, while its surface evolves into something autonomous — a textile composition that extends beyond function.
